Many children have a learning or developmental delaybecause of neglect, malnutrition, trauma or abuse. Many of them are never stimulated in their development. There are no special education services made available by the government, causing many children to roam the streets, which can lead to dangerous situations.
For some, this is even their first time going to school and learning something. The classroom atmosphere is often the opposite of the students’ home situation. We start at the very beginning with these children, regardless of their age, for example, with learning letters and numbers. Broad development is worked on, for example through sports, (Bible) stories, games, art, music, playing outside and practical tasks, such as helping in the school garden.
The nearly 100 children at Rainbow Centre are each stimulated at their own level in a loving environment. The children love coming to school because at least there the daily schedule is predictable, the adults are kind and patient, they get two nutritious and tasty meals a day, and they often hear that they are loved and valued.
In the middle of the slums of Humansdorp stands Rainbow Village, a special center for children and youth with various disabilities or disadvantages. Rainbow Village consists of:
